CipherOnce User Manual

Secure, private, one-time secret and file sharing — built with a zero-knowledge mindset from day one.

How it worksSecurity modelWhat you can shareTroubleshooting

What is CipherOnce?

CipherOnce is a privacy-first platform that allows you to share sensitive information and files that can be accessed only once and are automatically destroyed after viewing or expiration.

All encryption happens client-side in your browser. CipherOnce servers never see your secrets in plaintext, ensuring true zero-knowledge security.

How CipherOnce Works

01

Create a Secret

  1. 1Go to the Create Secret page
  2. 2Enter sensitive text — passwords, API keys, private notes, or messages
  3. 3Optionally attach a file (encrypted before upload)
  4. 4Set expiration time or maximum view count
  5. 5Add an optional passphrase for extra protection
  6. 6Click Create Secret
02

Share the Secret Link

  1. 1You'll receive a unique, one-time secret link
  2. 2Copy the entire URL — including the part after the #
  3. 3This fragment contains the encryption key and is never sent to the server
  4. 4Share the link securely with the intended recipient
  5. 5If you used a passphrase, share it separately via a different channel
03

Viewing a Secret

  1. 1The recipient opens the link in their browser
  2. 2Passphrase (if set) is required to proceed
  3. 3Secret is decrypted locally — never on the server
  4. 4Once viewed, the secret is permanently and irreversibly destroyed

Security & Privacy Model

Client-side encryption: Encryption keys never leave your device.
Zero-knowledge design: Servers store only encrypted ciphertext.
One-time access: Secrets self-destruct after viewing.
Metadata logging only: IP, user agent, and timestamps logged for abuse prevention only.
No tracking: No ads, trackers, or behavioral profiling of any kind.

What Can You Share?

Passwords, API keys, tokens
Private messages or credentials
Confidential documents and files
Legal, financial, or technical data
SSH keys and database credentials
Environment variables and secrets

Troubleshooting

01Ensure the full link including #key is copied — some apps truncate it
02Some messaging apps strip URL fragments — send via email or a secure channel
03Secrets cannot be recovered once viewed or expired — they're gone permanently
04On iOS, files may open in a new tab instead of downloading directly
